This is an updated and expanded edition of the previous book, which has been sold out. Bullfight is an extraordinary spectacle, that has evolved over centuries into a very unique, artistic event, filled with boldness, beauty and pageantry. The term is a misnomer and is totally misleading. It is not a sport; it is the confrontation between Man and his intelligence and sensitivity, against the Animal and its bestiality, with the purpose of creating Art. As it may not be easy to comprehend at first, this book endeavors to explain its world, its behind-the-scenes and its protagonists, who share their experiences, feelings and motivations with the reader. Based on interviews with everyone from the top brave bull-breeders and matadors to their assistants, managers, impresarios, tailors, surgeons, bullring employees, journalists and aficionados, it aspires to offer an in-depth, sensitive portrait of the Corrida, both for the seasoned bullfight fans as well as for the curious but uninitiated readers.

Este libro es un recorrido por el Barrio de las Letras, con toda su riqueza histórica y cultural y como es “mi” barrio desde hace cuarenta años, he añadido, en el plano personal, un toque taurino, flamenco y castizo. Aunque “mi barrio” es céntrico, comercial y muy turístico, dentro de la gran urbe que es Madrid, es casi un “pueblo” para nosotros los residentes. Sin embargo, ha ido cambiando y transformándose en épocas recientes y hemos perdido muchos de los lugares emblemáticos, tradicionales y legendarios que lo han definido, incluso antes de la crisis provocada por la pandemia.
El libro es un homenaje a los personajes que han forjado su historia, muchos de los cuales ya pertenecen a una tercera o cuarta generación. Mi propósito es compartir mi y su “memoria” personal con la esperanza de que despierten gratos recuerdos entre los lectores y los que ambulan por sus calles, visitan sus museos, sienten en sus cafés, gozan de su gastronomía, admiran su arquitectura, disfrutan de la oferta cultural, histórica y de la gran diversidad que hace que forasteros, como yo, se sienten “en casa”.
